Moving to ubuntu
After trying to resolve a persistent ssl issue with cygwin I’ve decided to move development to ubuntu using Virtualbox. I’m not sure why I didn’t do this earlier.
Hopefully things will be a lot less painful now.

Yes php has ubiquity but for someone new to web development, I’ve found that Ruby is far easier than php.

I have found that return and ridicule are highly correlated over the years. We have made more money on things that were highly ridiculed than on any other cohort. When I see people laughing at ideas and companies we have backed, I smile. It means we are going to make a lot of money on that investment.

I’ve been playing with Ruby, Python and Php and I’ve got to say Ruby is the one with the least barriers to get up and running with Php being the worst.
I develop on windows using cygwin and I know it’s not the ideal development environment but that’s all I have for now. Most of my time is spent researching weird edge cases causing even the simplest program not to run. Every dependency is a potential edge case that can cause at least 10 minutes on google and stackoverflow to resolve. And for some reason, whatever works for most people won’t work for me.
I’m really impressed with how well Ruby works on windows. But of course nothing beats JavaScript.
Reorder the script tags so that jQuery is loaded first. Yes order matters, at least in 2013.
I see that OMR has moved to a paid model. It was free for a while. There’s always railstutorial if you want to try rails.
Knowing how to read and understand source code is a valuable skill.
